Team Canada’s Olympic run continued right to the gold medal in the early hours of Friday, as our women’s national team beat Sweden in a penalty shoot-out that was a true heartstopper.

Households across the country woke their neighbours with cheers as the Red and White made history, building from our women’s national soccer success over the last few decades to a peak of national pride.

The player who stamped down the win was Vancouver’s super-sub, Julia Grasso, who played her junior soccer with ICSF before moving through the Whitecaps program, and blasted in an impeccable game-winning penalty shot.

But the superheroine of the hour had to be Canadian goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe, who let by a mere two penalties out of six taken by Sweden and never lost the expression of a goalie who knew destiny had her name on it.

Richmond FC salutes Canada’s super team for facing their challenges with strength and focus, coming together as a team, and giving national legend Christine Sinclair the medal her career deserves. As we watched new legends being formed, we can’t help but wonder how many of the next generation have been inspired to follow in their footsteps.

If the record attendance at our summer soccer camps and steadily growing registrations for the coming season are any indication, we’ve only just begun.

The fall season begins shortly. Registration is open. 🙂
