Richmond FC is pleased to announce that we are participating a new pilot program for concussion testing, with Dr. Naznin Virji-Babul of the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health at UBC.
An estimate of up to 3.8 million concussions occur in North America annually. Although, most symptoms of concussions disappear within 2 weeks, more severe concussions may led to symptoms lasting for months or years, greatly impacting the athlete’s life. Symptoms include depression, headaches, nausea, insomnia, and emotional irritability, which may severely impact athletic performance, family and friend relationships, and academic ability in the long run.
Furthermore, symptoms worsen if a concussion is mistreated or when a second concussion is received before the athlete has fully recovered from the first one. A second concussion is 3 times more likely to occur when the initial concussion has not been fully recovered yet.
Recent studies have shown that traditional neuropsychological tests used to assess concussions are subjective at best and inaccurate at worst. New research has shown that brain imaging with EEG may provide a much more accurate assessment which may aid physicians in making more accurate diagnosis. This would allow physicians to provide accurate information regarding the recovery and return-to-play of concussed athletes, so that athletes would be at a lower risk of long-term symptoms of concussion.
Richmond FC and EEGlewave Inc. is offering to provide this assessment for athletes of the Richmond FC. The assessment involves a 5 minute EEG scan and a traditional neuropsychological test, SCAT3, before the start of the season and another EEG scan and SCAT3 after any suspected concussion. The brain imaging would then be converted to understandable data to assist physicians in providing an accurate concussion diagnosis as well as to monitor recovery of the concussion.
Currently, EEGlewave aims at increasing its patient population size and refining its software for preparation for a public release.
Richmond FC players can book an EEGlewave appointment by contacting firstname.lastname@example.org Provide players full name, date of birth and current Richmond FC team (including age group, division and team name, e.g, U11 House Team 2)
