In soccer, to be in control of the ball is of great importance to every level of player. The ability to control an awkward bouncing ball quickly and effectively gives the player with the ball the immediate advantage. First (1st) touch is often the difference between success and failure in most situations during the match.

The 1st Touch Soccer Program is a skill development program for girls and boys born 2015 to 2008. The Program has been developed by Richmond FC to provide players within the Recreational stream the opportunity to get extra touches on the ball to further develop their individual soccer skills.

The 1st Touch Soccer Program will have a member of the Richmond FC Professional coaching staff assigned to oversee the program, with additional staff providing support, with the objective to provide the best development environment possible for this group of players at their current stage of their development.

The training model would follow Canada Soccer’s best practice model for this stage of development and be squad based training where players would be divided into groups based on their current ability level, and movement would occur between the groups based on the development needs of each individual player.

The focus of the sessions during the 10 week program, would be on developing individual soccer techniques, providing lots of touches on the ball, with an emphasis on ball manipulation, juggling, 1v1 skills, passing and receiving techniques.

There are no games in the 1st Touch Soccer Program. It is all skill development drills. If you are seeking a game-based playing environment, please check out the 2020 Recreational Spring Soccer League. You are welcome to register your child for both programs as the days do not conflict.

1st Touch does not refer to the first time playing soccer. It refers to the term in soccer “1st touch”, e.g., 1st touch when you receive the ball. The 1st Touch Soccer program is for girls and boys of all abilities (beginner, intermediate and advanced) and players will be divided based on skill level.

All players need proper soccer gear – cleats, shin guards, soccer socks and shorts. Players will receive a dri-fit training jersey that is the player’s to keep and should be worn at all sessions.
